Toyohari is a form of Meridian Therapy acupuncture founded in Japan in the late 1600 by a group of blind acupuncture practitioners and further developed by Mr Kodo Fukushima who established the Toyohari Medical Association in 1959.
They brought unique influences to acupuncture drawn from a heightened proprioceptive sensitivity. Their exceptional ability to pick up information tactically has led to a subtle, gentle and non-invasive approach.
Toyohari emphasises touch and the feel of energy to guide the treatment session. “The treatment is based on the practitioner’s ability to feel and work with the energy.”
Numerous delicate needle techniques have been developed and continuously refined over the years. Toyohari acupuncture is a constant evolving art of healing.
How does it work?
The unique specificity of Toyohari is the Touch Needle technique. “Feel through the needle to attune to the patient”. Better response is achieved by feeling how much or how little the person requires. Awareness and intent connect practitioner and patient at the tip of the needle. “The needle becomes an extension of the practitioner’s heart and mind” 1.
What happens during a Toyohari session?
Information is drawn from 3 main areas for palpation: abdominal, meridian, and pulse. Throughout the session response is monitored through pulse reading and changes on the skin. In addition to the root treatment Toyohari has a broad repertoire of branch treatments to support the root treatment.
Who would benefit?
The Toyohari style of acupuncture is able to treat a wide range of conditions, and suitable for all ages including children and babies. Shonishin or Children’ acupuncture is a derived form of Toyohari specializing in the treatment of children.
Most patients on average would need at least 4-5 sessions to achieve long lasting changes. Treatment packages are available on my website.
Toyohari tradition today
Toyohari is a beautiful healing modality; the touch is subtle and reassuring, caring and nurturing. It’s described as intuitive and playful by those who have experienced this style of acupuncture. “Today Toyohari tradition is alive and strong in Japan, and is growing worldwide” 2.
